AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

Lakeside Middle School was nam
ed an AVID National Demonstration School in 2008. Lakeside was the first school in the Northeast region with this distinction. Revalidation of National Demonstration status was granted in 2012 and 2015.  Demonstration Schools undergo a rigorous validation process and are required to be revalidated every few years to ensure high levels of implementation, with quality and fidelity to AVID strategies schoolwide.

What does it mean? AVID stands for Advancement via Individual Determination. It is an educational program aimed originally at students who would be the first in their families to go to college. But its success at raising student achievement has attracted widespread admiration and adaptation of its methods. The program focuses on philosophy as well as nuts and bolts details like how to study, how to take notes in class, how to organize your desk and much more.

How do schools win the designation? To win the honor of being an AVID Demonstration School, a school must exhibit a college-going culture evident throughout the campus, through rigor and high expectations for all students. The core program must provide excellent tutorials and quality implementation of the curriculum. A demonstration school takes on the role of being an AVID learning site for other schools and organizations to observe in action.

Schools and districts interested in implementing AVID, or expanding AVID in their districts or at their schools, can arrange to visit a National Demonstration School and experience a highly successful AVID System in action. At an AVID National Demonstration School, visitors can observe:

  • AVID as a schoolwide approach to college readiness.
  • Evidence of student achievement schoolwide.
  • Strong and committed leadership to college readiness for all students at both school and district levels
  • A center of learning for AVID best practices schoolwide.
  • A committed team of trained AVID educators dedicated to successful implementation of the AVID College Readiness System for all students.
  • Models for excellent inquiry-based AVID tutorials—both in the AVID Elective and, in some schools, selected content classrooms.
  • A showplace of the commitment and synergy that a strong AVID System creates for schoolwide college readiness
